Australia has a long running history of producing some of the best MotoGP champions. Here's a look at our top three legends.
1. Mick Doohan
Arguably Australia’s best-known world champion – and statistically its most successful with an impressive 54 victories, 95 podiums and 5 World Championships. Brisbane born MotoGP Legend Mick Doohan not only dominated, but also broke records and defined MotoGP in the 1990s.
2. Casey Stoner
The only Aussie to have won two MotoGP titles with two different manufacturers, Casey Stoner collected 38 on his way to crowns with Ducati and Honda before retiring from racing aged just 27 at the end of the 2012 campaign.
3. Wayne Gardner
Wayne Gardner rode when the 500cc machinery was widely regarded to be at its most difficult to handle. Seven of his 18 wins in the class came in his title-winning season in 1987, and he stands alongside Doohan and Stoner as representatives of Australia in the MotoGP Hall of Fame.
The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix will return to Phillip Island this October. Known for the breathtaking scenery and fluid track, Phillip Island has been the home of motorcycle racing for over 65 years and has hosted many unforgettable moments in MotoGP history.
Be sure to cheer on Australia's Jack Miller to see if he can grab the win on home soil.
2024 will mark the 35th anniversary of the first Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix to be held at the world-renowned Phillip Island circuit in 1989. In that year, Australian Wayne Gardner was victorious in front of a rapturous home crowd – a feat he repeated the following year.
