The woman took to Reddit to ask if it was unreasonable for them to cancel the subscription service after realising they weren’t using it, despite other family members using it for free.
“This weekend, we decided to cancel our Netflix 'cause we weren't using it, and we decided if there is ever something we want to watch on there, then we will get it again,” she asked the subreddit Am I the A**hole?
“So his aunt calls and starts lecturing him about his finances, [saying] that he shouldn't spend so much money that he doesn't have enough left to pay for the Netflix and that she is using it and needs him to pay.”
The woman, who overheard the conversation, said she told her partner to tell her aunt she could pay for it if she wanted to keep using it.
The aunt has since told other members of the family, some of whom are already angry, that they had cancelled their Disney+ subscription months prior.
“Now the aunt talked to his mom, and they are saying I am an a**hole because I am ‘forcing’ my boyfriend to spend all his money on me so he can't pay for the things they need,” she said.
But Redditors were quick to jump to her defence, saying she wasn’t the “a**hole”.
“Not the a**hole. If you want to be petty, you could tell them that they shouldn't be so financially careless that they can't afford to pay for their own streaming services,” one person said.
“Do you know a good way to be responsible about your finances? Don't pay for streaming services you aren't using,” said another.
